Overview
Snapcards is a vocabulary learning app that uses artificial intelligence to generate vocabulary cards from photos. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
Data We Collect
Photos you scan
When you scan a photo, it is sent to our server and forwarded to a third-party AI provider to generate vocabulary cards. Photos are not stored — they are discarded once processing is complete.
AI chat
When you use the AI chat, your messages and the relevant card or scan context are sent to our server and forwarded to a third-party AI provider. Chat messages are not stored on our server. Chat history is kept locally on your device only.
Text-to-speech & AI exercises
Words or sentences you listen to or practise with are sent to our server and forwarded to a third-party AI provider. The input text is not stored on our server.
Share links
When you create a share link, the vocabulary card data and optional image are uploaded to our server so anyone with the link can view them. Share links expire after 30 days and the data is then permanently deleted.
Analytics
We use PostHog (EU-hosted) to collect anonymous usage analytics — for example which features are used, session counts, and language selections. Analytics never include the content of your vocabulary cards, photos, or messages. Data is tied to an anonymous device identifier, not your identity.
Feedback
If you submit feedback, we store your message (and email if provided) on our server solely to improve the app.
Locally stored data
Vocabulary cards, review progress, and settings are stored on your device. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly share it.
Data We Do NOT Collect
- No user accounts or personal profiles
- No names or contact information (unless voluntarily provided via feedback)
- No location data
- No advertising identifiers
- No cookies
Device Permissions
- Camera — To photograph scenes or text for scanning
- Photo Library — To select existing photos
- Notifications — For optional daily review reminders
You can revoke these at any time through your device settings.
Third-Party Services
- AI service providers — Process images, generate audio, power chat and exercises. We currently use services from Google and OpenAI. These providers may temporarily retain data according to their own policies. The providers we use may change over time.
- PostHog (EU-hosted) — Anonymous usage analytics. Privacy policy.
We do not sell or share your data with any other third parties.
Data Retention
- Photos — Not stored. Discarded after processing.
- Share links — Stored for up to 30 days, then deleted.
- Chat messages — Not stored on our server.
- Analytics — Up to 12 months on EU servers.
- Feedback — Stored until manually reviewed and deleted.
- Local data — On your device until you delete it or uninstall the app.
Children's Privacy
Snapcards does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Your Rights
We do not maintain user accounts. Your locally stored data is fully under your control. If you submitted feedback and would like it deleted, contact us at the address below.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above.
